How to Choose Your Bedroom Lighting

Some ideas on how to choose lighting for your bedroom!

We often don’t think about the lighting in our bedrooms, but the right lighting can make such a difference. Your bedroom is your haven. At the end of a busy day you need a bedroom where you can fall into a comfy bed and snuggle under your quilt for relaxation and restoration.

As our lives get busier, our rooms functions are changing also. Many bedrooms are used for study, work, reading, all which can make getting the right lighting a bit trickier. Firstly, you need to look at your room and consider the following:

  1. What type of lighting do you need?

  2. What is your space being used for?

  3. Will you need different lighting in different parts of the room?

  4. What is the theme or style you would like in your bedroom?

1.) What type of lighting do you need

Bedside lighting is a key lighting for consideration. Will this light be functional – to use when reading, writing, etc. Or is more about being an accessory within the room? Table lamps on bedside tables provide strong symmetry and are a classical option.

2.) Think about how the lighting is being used.

Think about the placement of lamps within the room. Is there an outlet nearby, if not how can you power the lamp? Extension cords can often break a clean, simple design, so think about it first! Also deciding where in the room the lamp will go can impact on the the size and shape of the lamp. Is it a corner which can accommodate a full length floor lamp. Is it for on a table and if so, would a narrow or wider base work better? Different parts of a room work better with different shapes, so review carefully.

3.) How much lighting will you need?

You may need multiple layers of light depending on how you use your bedroom. Do you watch TV in your room? Read? Study? Exercise? Layer your lighting with requirements in the areas you need, such as a table or floor lamp to help with reading or studying if needed, or softer lighting if it is more about creating an ambience.

4.) What is your bedroom theme or style?

Lighting really can have a huge impact on the style of the room.  If the lighting looks out of place then the room doesn’t flow.  A bedroom should be a place of sanctuary and peace, so it’s important to get a balance of your style and lighting that is soothing and creates the right ambience. The colour theme of your room is also impacted by lighting. Bright rooms need less light than a dark or moody bedroom. Don’t forget natural light also plays a part within your lighting selections.

5.) Functionality

Don’t forget about the actual locations of switches! It is important that these are convenient and work within how you will use it. For example, make sure your bedside table lighting is easily accessible from your bed.

Cooling Green
When searching for hints on bedroom colors and moods, most ask which colour will create a cool and soft mood. Greens create a cool ambiance and creates a soothing environment. Sage is one of the most popular tone of greens used in interior painting.  A popular combination is sage and ivory. Tones of olive can also be calming bedroom colors and ideal for adults bedrooms.

Purple
Purple is a color considered to stimulate the creative part of your brain. It can be a strong color which has been associated with royalty and femininity. The tones of purple and violet are perfect colours for girls rooms. This is one of the most decorative hues which can convert a boring space into a glamorous area. One of the classic bedroom color schemes utilising purple is using grey as a contrast colour.

Yellow
If you want bright bedroom colors and moods, along with cheerful ambiance and illusion of space, then yellow is the right pick. A light yellow can add a touch of colour without being overbearing. A slighter warmer yellow or orange can ad brightness to any room. Mixing a combination of a yellow ocher with grey creates a bright, attention seeking space.

Neutral Grey and Beige

If you feel nervous about using colour or you are not sure what colour to pick, then neutral shades are your best choice. Shades of gray and beige are those which have a neutral effect on the ambiance of your room, but still add freshness whilst being simple and classy. They are cool, simple colours and are safe picks which are easy to match too. You spend so much time in your bedroom, its important it is your haven that you look forward to spending each evening in and is a welcoming environment. Why not give your walls a makeover with a new colour?

Paint Colours that Make Rooms Look Bigger

Small houses and smaller rooms are becoming very common, but you can still decorate them to make it appear large and luxurious, simply by using paint colours that make rooms look bigger. Here's an idea on the kind of colours you can use and methods of enhancing the effect of these colours.

Not everyone has the luxury of space, but you can create the illusion of space. Several factors in combination with the use of some good paint colours are what will make any room appear larger than it already is. Here are a few tips.

Choosing the Right Paint Colours for Small Rooms
White is the best shade to make a room look bigger. Nothing creates a better illusion of space as does the colour white. However, not everyone may be comfortable with the use of this colour because too much white can actually make a space look dull. You can play with a few colours that look bright and add colour without darkening your room. These colours include:

Soft
Pink

Light
Blue
Light
Sea Green
Lavender Pale
Yellow
Peach

How to use Paint Colours for Small Rooms
There is a specific technique that should be followed when using paint colourss that make rooms look bigger. Some tips include:

  • Only use one colour on the walls when you are trying to make your room look bigger. Don't try to combine too many colourss as the room starts looking cramped.
  • If you think white is your best bet but still want to add a dash of colour, paint just one wall in any other light colour that you like.
  • Use furniture and accessories that complement the colour on the walls so that the room looks larger. Using heavy contrasts will make your efforts at enhancing the visual space of your room futile.
  • If the room is narrow, paint horizontal stripes on it to make it look wider. Similarly, if the room has a low ceiling, you may paint vertical stripes on the walls to make it appear taller.
  • Another great way to deal with low ceilings or to even create the illusion of space is to have the wall paint colour extend to the ceiling. This method unifies to room to make it look larger than it actually is.
  • Try to match the wall colours to the colour of the flooring. This is again in keeping with the thought that the room should look unified by the use of colours, and therefore appear bigger.
  • Make sure that the room you are trying to enhance visually has enough lighting. While natural lighting works wonders to make any small room appear larger, it may not always be available. In such a case, light colours enhance the little natural light that comes in to make rooms look larger. Also, using appropriate artificial lighting in key spaces (such as corners of rooms) is a good idea to create the illusion of space.
  • Finally, use mirrors that reflect the light colours in your room so that it looks larger. A nice and long horizontal mirror on a wall can easily add as a decorative element as well as make the room look much bigger.

Happy decorating from Bedshed.

How to Make a Small Master Bedroom Look Bigger

The first lesson you need to learn while planning a master bedroom is that you can't afford to have clutter lying around in your room. Even the slightest of clutter will make your room look smaller in an instance. Remove clutter from not only the bed but from the top of every furniture piece too. This way, your room will look clean and big at the same time.

  • The first step in learning tips to make a small master bedroom look bigger, is to get rid of your television, especially if you still have the older style, large TV’s. Throw it in the living room and make some space for a painting or for a small princess table. If you have a thin LED or an LCD, mount it on the wall to increase floor space.
  • Now let's move on to your bed. The bed should be low in height, recommended the height of your knees. For the bed, use a headboard of your choice but avoid using a foot board. Since the bed takes most amount of space, it shouldn't be messy. Keep a maximum of 5 pillows.
  • If you have too many drawers stuck to your walls or if your closet is taking up a lot of floor space, replace them with walk in closets and wardrobes. These will give you more floor space which in turn will make your room look really big. Avoid any type of furniture that will make your room a problem for easy movement.
  • While painting your master bedroom, use nude, natural or pastel colors. These are paint colors that make rooms look bigger than they actually are. The ceiling should be a shade lighter than the wall colors.
  • Mirrors can be used as a very strong weapon while learning to make a small master bedroom look bigger. You cannot add too many mirrors to your room as this will result in clutter. Instead, place one near the window so that it can reflect sunlight into your room and one right in front of the bed, that will visually double the size of your room.
  • Wood works the best as flooring,  especially when you want the room to look bigger. If you use wide floor boards made out of light wood, your room will get a feeling of opening up. It will look bigger than the first glance itself. If you have a wallpaper, make sure it's plain and simple and matches with the flooring.

Good luck in maximising your bedroom space and making it your relaxing haven.

Are you bored of seeing the same bedroom interior? Here are some tips on how to turn your bedroom into a sanctuary from the stresses of daily life.

  1. Let the natural light in! Allowing natural light to flow into your bedroom during the day will kill staleness and refresh your room on a daily basis.
  2. Can’t afford a total bedroom makeover? Consider updating your linen or introducing a new colour through cushions and throws to enliven your mood and reflect the spirit of the new season.
  3. Think about what makes you happy and provides you the greatest sense of luxury, tranquillity and peace. Is it silks, scented candles, lots of pillows, certain colours or feather doona’s, photos of friends and family or music CD’s? Whatever it is, introduce one or some of these elements to indulge your senses.
  4. If your bedroom has adequate space for a seating area, select a comfy chair or chaise lounge that will entice you to curl up, relax, and read a good book.
  5. Material quality will also affect how you feel. Consider the thread count of your linen. Thread count is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. The higher the thread count, the smoother and softer the sheets will be.
  6. If you have hard floors, consider a rug to create warmth and comfort.
  7. If you have a small bedroom, a cleverly positioned mirror can make the room appear larger.
  8. Declutter! Clutter can remind us of all that we have to get done in our daily lives. Re-organise clutter into the working zones of your home.
  9. Consider repainting your bedroom. A new, fresh colour can give you a complete bedroom makeover and assist you in unwinding. Soft blues and greens are considered cool and calming colours. Earth and neutral tones like taupe and brown do the trick as well.
  10. Avoid having computers or televisions in your bedroom. They can distract you and keep you awake.
  11. Keep your bedroom tidy. A tidy room helps makes you feel calm and relaxed!

Your child’s bedroom should be their sanctuary. Like adults, children have a lot to deal with many in their busy day, so it’s important their bedroom is a safe haven to study, play, and fall asleep in.

Here are some tips on how to enhance your children’s bedroom environment and establish a good bedtime and sleep routine.

  • Choose a relaxing colour and avoid using too many colours in the one room. Use various hues and shades of the same colour if possible for feature work.
  • Lighting should be reminiscent of daylight during the day and soft and gentle in the evening.
  • Let your child's bedroom reflect his or her interests and personality. Put some of their own artwork on the walls and any trophies or awards on a special shelf. Just be careful that bedroom decorations don’t become overstimulating.
  • Organise children’s toys efficiently. This will help reduce clutter and disorder.
  • Allow room around your child’s bed so they do not feel boxed in.
  • Use minimal auditory stimulation in your child’s bedroom. Use “white noise” for soothing a child and blocking out household sounds. A fan or fish tank are good options.
  • Allow a child to sleep with a night-light on. Night-lights help remind children they are in a safe bedroom. Choose a dim nightlight, with just enough light to let off a glow to see around. Too much light at night can interfere with sleep patterns.
  • Create a bedtime routine that is calm and peaceful and allow plenty of time to work through this routine. For example, bath, pyjamas, teeth, story, hug etc. If a child is overstimulated before bed, they may not be prepared for sleep.
  • Encourage your child to play in their bedroom during the day on their own, with friends and with you. If children are unfamiliar with their bedroom and only go in the room to sleep, they will not feel comfortable or safe at night.
  • Reward good sleep. Make a "sleeping chart" to reinforce positive bedtime behaviour.
  • Allow natural light and air into your child’s bedroom. Good air circulation improves the air quality and atmosphere of a room.
  • When you purchase new bedroom furniture, make sure it meets today’s safety standards.
  • Ensure toddler beds are equipped with bed rails.
  • Position beds away from windows, heating vents, radiators, lamps, curtains or window-blind cords.
  • Make sure your child is sleeping on a mattress suitable for their body.
  • Buy bed linen that your child likes – they will be more inclined to want to go to bed!
  • Children’s bed linen should be machine washable, soft and made from natural fibres. Pillow protectors protect kids from dust mites and other allergens. A quality stain-resistant mattress protector will not only protect against accidents, but many are hypoallergenic.

As the mercury slowly rises and we emerge from our winter hibernation, it’s time to brighten up our homes to reflect one of the best times of the year – Spring.

While it’s traditionally the time we clean out the cupboards and de-clutter, it’s also a great time to take a look at some of the simplest ways to inject some new colour into your surroundings.

In the bedroom, for instance, one of the easiest (and most cost effective) ways to give your bedroom an instant facelift is with new bed linen. And this season we are spoilt for choice. Here are some of the latest colour trends for Spring 2011 to inspire you…

Pink: But not just any pink. Honeysuckle pink (a bright, almost reddish hue) was voted the colour of the year by Pantone, and, as far as fashion goes, it showed up on miles of spring 2011 runways, from Jil Sander to Valentino to DKNY. This signature pink also loves to pair up with other brights like aqua and orange or offering some bold contrast to more neutral tones like khaki and sand.

Orange: The fashion universe loves orange, and this Spring it’s sprung up in a bushel of juicy hues like a mouth-watering persimmon shade.

Yellow: Yellow is ranged from a warm, buttery tone at Chanel to the palest, prettiest shades of chartreuse at Jason Wu and Proenza. In the spirit of the 70s, modern shades of mustard are emerging as well.

Blue: Truth be told, nothing gets more classic than blue, especially this Spring's offerings. Think a vibrant aqua, a dusty sky blue, and the richest navy. Surprise blue move of the moment: Sky blue was often paired with bright orange and rust to gorgeous effect.

Earth tones: In a sharp contrast to all the spicier hues of spring, the season also welcomed a cool breeze of soothing, earth-coloured tones, from sand to a Santa Fe rusty red.

White: Yes, white is pretty much always a big colour for Spring and Summer.
