What is mito?
Mito is a genetic disorder that robs the body’s cells of energy. Over time, this can cause multiple organ dysfunction and potentially death.
How are sufferers affected?
People with mito can be affected in many different ways, some are listed below:
- Lose their sight or hearing
- Suffer muscle weakness and pain
- Be unable to walk, eat, swallow or talk normally
- Have strokes or seizures
- Develop liver disease or diabetes
- Suffer heart, respiratory or digestive problems
How common is mito?
1 in 200 people carry genetic mutations that put them at risk of developing mito and 1 in 5000 births will develop a life threatening form of mito.
What can we do to help?
The AMDF aims to find a cure for this debilitating disease and is committed to support and fund research projects to understand more about mitochondrial medicine.The AMDF also offers support to patients and their families through its patient services.
