Did you know your mattress has a use by date?

The importance of replacing mattresses

We spend a third of our lives in bed, yet rarely consider the wear and tear our mattress endures over this time. Ensuring that your mattress is durable and long-lasting comes down to choosing the right one for your needs, but also the care taken over its life – because yes, mattresses do have a use by date!

What should I look for in a new mattress?

When selecting a new mattress keep an eye out for high quality memory foam and coil mattresses. The materials which create your mattress will be the factors influencing your comfort, support and mattress life.

Coil mattresses have great airflow and feel cooler next to the skin. Coil technology is lighter weight than a memory foam equivalent. And, a quality coil mattress will last at least 8 years when the mattress well cared for. The most durable coil mattresses have:

When should I replace my mattress?

Manufacturers and medical professionals recommend you replace your mattress around every 8 years or sooner, depending on how it’s treated.

If your mattress is of poor quality or you don’t look after it properly, you may need to replace it earlier. Or, if you regularly wake up with a stuffy or running nose, with itchy eyes or skin, your mattress may have accumulated dust mite faeces or dead skin skills that are creating allergens. For health and hygiene reasons alone, it is recommended that your replace your mattress every 8 years or even sooner.

In addition, any annoying hollows or lumps indicate that your mattress has reached its use by date. Or, if you wake up with a sore back or sore joints it’s certainly time to consider a new mattress purchase.

It is also suggested that as your body ages, you will appreciate softer padding to support your joints and pressure points. Of course, this doesn’t mean a soft or saggy bed! The padding refers to the top layer of your mattress, it is important that the inherent structure support your skeletal system.

How do I care for my mattress properly?

All mattresses will last longer with good care. There are some easy to implement things to lengthen the life of your mattress:

  • When moving a mattress, do not bend it, or place furniture on top of it

  • Use a correctly supporting ensemble base, or slat base depending on your mattress type

  • Some mattresses should not be flipped, so follow the manufacturer's instructions

  • Use a mattress protector

Keep all of your bedding dry, and protected from stains, odours, and moisture. Dry mattresses last longer because moisture breaks down the textiles, ticking, and foam. Moisture also contributes to the growth of bacteria, fungus, and sometimes even parasites. Be careful to not clean mattresses with chemicals, or liquids. Keep your mattress fresh, be sure to avoid placing wet towels, or wet clothing on the bed surface. If the bedding or mattress materials get wet, such as a spill, immediately blot the area and allow the mattress to dry for several hours uncovered.

If you take the right steps in choosing and caring for your mattress, it should live a long healthy life giving you a great night’s sleep every night.
