Best mattress for teenagers

You know what they say - kids, they grow up so fast!

One day you’re changing nappies and teaching them to take their first steps, and then in the blink of an eye they’ve transformed into a teenager.

The transition from tyke to teen is a big one. It marks a period when many kids begin to assert their independence and develop their unique identities. It’s also a phase that is characterised by remarkable physical growth, so it’s a great time to upgrade their bedroom to accommodate their changing needs.

To help you do just that, we’ve developed this helpful guide to finding the best mattress for your teenagers!

Time to upgrade?

If your teen is still sleeping on their childhood mattress, it’s probably time to upgrade - and there are a number of reasons why.

They probably need more space

Young children often start out with a single mattress. At 920 x 1,880 mm in size, they’re perfectly sized for littlies - but they don’t leave a lot of elbow room for teens, and after a growth spurt, they may just find their feet poking over the end of their mattress.

For teenagers, we would suggest considering a king single. With dimensions of 1,070 x 2,040 mm, king singles are both wider and longer, providing your teenager with more space to stretch out in every direction. Alternatively, if they tend to move around a lot during sleep, you might want to contemplate a double mattress measuring 1,380 x 1,880 mm. Double mattresses are significantly wider than single ones, making them ideal for teenagers with a bit of extra room available in their bedrooms. However, taller teenagers may want to explore other options, as double mattresses don't offer any additional length compared to a single. If space isn't a concern and your teenager needs ample room, you might even consider a queen mattress measuring 1,530 x 2,040 mm. Providing plenty of space width and length wise , a queen bed will serve your teenager well into adulthood.

They have more ‘stuff’

As they grow older, kids often accumulate more belongings than Mary Poppins' magical bag can handle. Upgrade to a bigger bed with built-in storage, and voilà! No more messy teenager chaos.

They need room for sleepovers

As kids mature, their social lives often kick into high gear. Providing them with a bigger bed, or a versatile option, like a single-over-double bunk bed or a  trundle bed, will provide them with the space they need to enjoy their time with their friends.

Teen mattress must-haves

So if it’s time to get them a new mattress, how do you find the best option? We’d recommend you consider the below:

Support

Teenagers are still growing, so it's essential to provide them with proper support during their developmental years. Look for a mattress that offers a balance between comfort and support. Memory foam mattresses are known for their contouring properties and can provide excellent support for growing bodies. Additionally, hybrid mattresses, which combine memory foam and innerspring coils, can also be a good option for support and comfort.

Pressure relief

Teenagers often experience physical stress from sports, extracurricular activities, and carrying heavy backpacks. A mattress that offers pressure relief can help alleviate muscle soreness and ensure a more restorative sleep. Memory foam and latex mattresses are known for their pressure-relieving capabilities.

Cooling features

Teenagers, like adults, can experience temperature fluctuations during the night. Look for mattresses that incorporate cooling technologies to prevent overheating. Gel-infused memory foam and breathable covers can help dissipate body heat, promoting a more comfortable sleep environment.

Durability

Teenagers can be rough on their belongings, including their mattresses. Investing in a durable and long-lasting mattress can save you money in the long run. High-quality memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses are often built to withstand regular wear and tear.

Motion isolation

For teenagers sharing a bed with a sibling or a friend during sleepovers, motion isolation is crucial. Memory foam and latex mattresses excel in this area, as they absorb motion and prevent disturbances caused by movement.
