Finding the best mattress for couples

Finding the best mattress for couples

Having a special someone to sleep next to every night is wonderful, right? There’s nothing better than snuggling up with your loved one at bedtime and it’s comforting to know that your partner is beside you in the middle of the night. But sharing your life and your space with someone can be a special sort of frustrating, especially when it comes to getting some shut eye.

If you’ve ever been woken up by your partner’s thunderous snoring, shifting around, bed hogging or cold feet on your back, then you’ll know that sleeping next to someone is not always easy. Living the single life might even start to seem like an appealing option after one too many sleepless nights. An uncomfortable mattress can make sharing a bed almost unbearable, exacerbating issues with partner disturbance and snoring – it’s a common problem that many couples face.

Poor sleep quality can breed resentment in a relationship so if you’ve ever found yourself fantasising about separate bedrooms, or sniping at your partner after a bad night’s sleep, then it might be time to upgrade your mattress.

If you want to wake up feeling rested in the arms of your significant other, then check out Bedshed’s top tips for finding the best mattress for couples.

1

Find a mattress with room for two

When it comes to sharing a bed, ensuring you have plenty of space is a must! Sharing a tiny single bed in a dorm may have been cute when you were at university, but it will quickly wear thin in a long-term relationship. Many couples will choose to opt for a queen size bed for a comfortable fit. If you or your partner are the type that like to stretch out then you may even want to consider a king bed (or a super king if you both love to starfish!). If you’re one of the 33% of Australian’s who wish they had a bigger bed, then you’ll appreciate the importance of choosing a bed to comfortably fit both you and your partner. Find a mattress designed to reduce partner disturbance

Being woken in the middle of the night by a partner who is tossing in their sleep, or on a different sleep schedule to you, can be very annoying. Finding a mattress that is made out of materials that reduce motion transfer can make a big difference to the quality of your sleep. Foam mattresses are known to reduce partner disturbance and are a popular choice for couples. Whilst some spring mattresses will tend to react to your movement and transfer motion across the bed, a foam mattress will absorb any movement and adjust to the shape of your body, preventing any sagging or rolling. If you prefer the feel of spring mattresses then consider a pocket spring mattress, which is designed to minimise partner disturbance with spring that move independently from one another - you can find out more about the difference between spring and foam mattresses here

Find a firmness that works for you both

The hardest part of finding a mattress as a couple is that you will both have different needs and comfort preferences. Finding a mattress that works for you both can take time, and a little bit of compromise. Your height, weight, health and sleeping style can all affect the level of firmness that you need in a mattress and it’s common for couples to find that they’re on opposite ends when it comes to comfort preferences. Many men for instance will prefer a firmer mattress, whilst their partner may require a softer surface for proper support and comfort. If you both have very different needs, then consider opting for a medium or firmer mattress in memory foam or with a pocket coil system as this will mean that your mattress can adjust to your individual sleeping positions and needs for a more comfortable night’s sleep.
