Bedroom on a budget (how to decorate when you're strapped for cash)

Bedroom on a budget (how to decorate when you're strapped for cash)

It’s often the case that our bedrooms are an afterthought when it comes to decorating. They’re a space not often seen by visitors, and so, many of us simply don’t put much thought into their design or layout. They tend to be the dumping ground for everything we need to access on a daily basis, as well as a random assortment of other things we’ve collected along the way - where else are you going to keep the hand-me-downs and gifts from grandma? Yes, the humble bedroom is undoubtedly one of the most neglected rooms in the whole house. Ironically, it’s also the room in which we’re likely to spend the most time - did you know that we spend up to a third of our lives sleeping?

So, it’s worth investing a little into the bedroom. Unfortunately, redecorating can be expensive. Bedroom essentials, like your mattress, are often some of the biggest ticket items in your home but don’t despair! It’s easier than you think to design a bedroom you love, even when you’re strapped for cash. Here are a few tips from the experts at Bedshed.

Change the layout

Switching up the layout of your bedroom is the easiest way to change up the look of your space, and it’s totally free! Just by moving things around, you can dramatically change how your space feels. Start by working out what furniture might be omitted from your room, reducing clutter and taking out pieces that don’t serve a purpose in your space can make a big difference. Removing unnecessary items will free up space for you to change your beds’ orientation, or ensure that you can comfortably walk around your room. The more spacious and airy that your bedroom feels, the better.

Update your bedding

Your bed is the focal point of your room, so the easiest way to change the look of your space is to update your bedding. New sheets and blankets in different colours, patterns and textures can have a big impact, whilst a soft, luxurious pillow can give your bed a new lease on life. This is a quick, simple and budget-friendly way to quickly change up your bedroom every season.

Storage

aspen suite

New storage can make your bedroom much more functional and helps to open up space for decorative elements like art, lighting and soft furnishings. We recommend investing in versatile storage furniture and beds that are capable of performing multiple functions. A great storage piece will help to reduce clutter, provide a space for storage and meet an everyday need (such as providing a space to sleep). Find more storage tips here.

Paint

Paint is a simple and inexpensive way to change the look of your space. Adding a feature wall or updating the shade of your bedroom walls can make a huge difference to your space. Certain colours have been proven to be better for sleep than others, whites, light greys and soft blue shades are calming whilst vibrant yellows, greens and reds might keep you awake. Use colour to communicate your personality. Paint doesn’t have to be limited to your walls either, it can also be used to update old or tired furniture. You don’t need to blow your budget to create a bedroom that fits your style - a little bit of creativity and some cost-effective updates can easily transform it into a space you love.
