Is a TEMPUR® mattress right for you?

Is a TEMPUR® mattress right for you?

Is a TEMPUR mattress on your wishlist? At Bedshed, we get asked about this popular brand a lot - its reputation for quality, comfort and innovation often precedes it. Over the years, TEMPUR® (known as Tempurpedic in other parts of the world) has proven itself to be a standout in the mattress industry and as a result, it has built up a particularly loyal following of customers who swear by the benefits of its mattresses.

And in case you’re wondering, the benefits certainly are plentiful! TEMPUR® mattresses are made from a special visco-elastic, temperature sensitive foam that was first designed for NASA back in the 1970s. The foam is made from billions of open cells that contract under your body weight, perfectly melding around you to relieve pressure and provide support in all the right areas. They’re adjustable-friendly and perfect for those who sleep with a partner, as the foam absorbs movement to minimise partner disturbance.

At the end of the day though, there is no one-size-fits-all solution to the perfect mattress. The best mattress for you will ultimately be a matter of personal preference. TEMPUR® mattresses are unique and quite different from the traditional spring mattresses that many of us have grown up with, so it's worth it to do your research before purchasing one. If you’re thinking about taking the plunge and getting a TEMPUR® mattress for the first time, then read on below.

How TEMPUR® mattresses compare to spring mattresses

When it comes to shopping for a mattress, one of the key things you’ll need to consider is whether you should opt for a foam mattress or a spring mattress.

For many people, traditional spring mattresses are what they grew up with, but it’s well worth considering quality foam mattresses like TEMPUR®, as they offer a number of advantages over spring mattresses.

Let’s take a look at how the two compare.

Comfort & support

Many spring mattresses will provide uneven support across the sleep surface due to their design, and may even develop lumps and bumps over time due to their spring support systems. Memory foam on the other hand, is designed to absorb and redistribute pressure, ensuring you get the correct amount of support when you’re sleeping. TEMPUR® does this best, absorbing more pressure than other memory foam mattresses to offer the most comfortable night’s sleep.

Quality foam mattresses like TEMPUR® are designed to adapt to the shape of the body, reacting to heat and adjusting to your movements. This allows them to mould to the contours of your shape much more effectively than a spring mattress which takes the pressure off joints, helps with spinal alignment and provides a much higher degree of personalised comfort than you would find with a spring mattress. Buyers should be aware that poor quality memory foam mattresses are prone to degrading over time, limiting responsiveness and causing sagging in some areas, which can cause joint and back pain.

Unlike the springy feel of traditional mattresses, memory foam mattresses tend to cradle the body much more. Many people describe the experience of sleeping on one as being similar to feeling as if they were ‘sinking’ into a cloud. Not everyone prefers this feeling, but a lot of people quickly find they sleep much more soundly on a TEMPUR® mattress than they ever did on a spring mattress.

Memory foam mattresses generally retain more heat than spring mattresses, but with TEMPUR® you can rest assured that you’ll enjoy a cool, comfortable night’s sleep as they’re made with cooling materials.

Motion transfer

Memory foam mattresses are known for their reduced motion transfer compared to spring mattresses. TEMPUR® mattresses in particular are dense enough to absorb practically every movement you make, which means you won’t feel a thing if your partner is getting up and down to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night!

Due to their construction, most spring mattresses are prone to at least a little bit of motion transfer, especially if they are a bonnell spring design. If you’re sharing a bed, a TEMPUR® mattress is certainly the way to go.

Adjustable base compatibility

Whilst there are some ‘hybrid’ mattresses out there made up of both foam and spring layers that will work on an adjustable base, it’s generally best to choose a memory foam mattress like TEMPUR®. TEMPUR® mattresses are flexible enough to be adjusted to any position, which means you can comfortably elevate them with an adjustable base so that you can sit up in bed, or sleep in healthy positions like the Zero-G position. An adjustable base is a great complement to your TEMPUR® mattress and its ability to reduce the strain on your back or joints, whilst also fitting in with your lifestyle and the way you like to use your bed.

Durability

You can expect 10 years of lasting quality from a TEMPUR® mattress, this is guaranteed with a warranty, so you can be assured that you’ll be satisfied with your purchase for many years to come. You can expect most quality spring mattresses to last about 8 years, before the comfort layers and spring start to break down.

Sleeping positions

TEMPUR® mattresses are ideal for most types of sleepers - side, stomach and back sleepers will all find they can get into a comfortable position on these mattresses, and with the help of an adjustable base you can even get into the Zero-G position! Spring mattresses, however, are usually recommended to back sleepers. Those who sleep on their side exert the most pressure on their joints and may be better off with the contouring support of a memory foam mattress. Stomach sleepers may also find that they benefit from the conformance of a memory foam mattress, although many are also fine on a softer spring mattress.
