Mattress advice from the experts

Mattress advice from the experts

The average person will spend one third of their lives in bed, so why not make that sleep as restful as it possibly can be with the perfect mattress

Most mattresses tend to look the same from the outside, so how do you know what softness, firmness, fiber covering, springs or density of foam is right for you? We all have different health needs, budgets and comfort preferences, so the perfect choice for one person may not be for another!

Let Bedshed assist you in choosing the perfect mattress and enjoy the confidence of knowing that you’re in good hands - because no one’s better in the bedroom!

Whether you are losing vital sleep from partner disturbance, back pain, being too hot or just simply want to wake up feeling rested and refreshed, we can help. Get some of our best tips and advice on choosing a mattress below.

Spring

Spring mattresses are usually made from a spring-based support system underneath layers of foam. There are a lot of different types of spring mattresses on the market - from continuous coil systems to pocket springs systems. You can find out more about spring mattresses here, and how they compare to memory foam. Popular spring mattresses from our range include the pocket coil Insignia Platinum mattress, Sealy Posturepedic Elevate and Dreamsense Slumber mattress.

Foam

Foam mattresses are made entirely from foam material and have no springs. Compared to spring mattresses they tend to have a less bouncy feel and will contour more to the shape of your body. They often offer excellent pressure relief, reduce partner disruption and can be paired with an adjustable base. Our range of TEMPUR mattresses feature visco-elastic, temperature sensitive material that moulds to the exact contours of your body, providing gentle support and the feeling of weightlessness whilst you’re sleeping.

Hybrid

As the name suggests, hybrid mattresses are a combination of both spring and foam mattress types. They often include an innerspring support system, layers of foam and/or latex and sometimes even an additional layer of micro-coils for improved pressure relief.

Consider how firm your mattress should be

How firm your mattress should be will depend on your body weight, health needs and sleeping position. Here’s a things to keep in mind:

Firm

If you’re a tummy sleeper then it’s a good idea to invest in a firm mattress as they will keep your spine better aligned. For heavier people, firmer mattresses are usually the best option because they won’t sink in and will provide the correct amount of support.

Medium

Medium mattresses tend to be ‘just right’ for most people. If you’re a side sleeper or back sleeper then a medium feel mattress will provide just the right amount of give, without pushing back too much and causing your spine to go out of alignment.

Soft

If you're a side sleeper then you may find that a soft or ‘plush’ mattress is the right option for you as they will contour to the curves of your body.

Think about the size of your mattress

The size of your mattress matters. If you’re the type of person that likes to spread out then you’ll need a lot more room to get comfortable at night than someone who likes to sleep in the foetal position. If you sleep with a partner then needs can vary as well - some couples love to cozy up at night, whilst others prefer to keep a bit of space between them. Check out our bedroom sizes guide for our recommendations on the right bed size for you.

Common sleep issues

Before you buy a new mattress, take the time to think about whether you experience any issues like sleep disruption or back pain. If you’re finding that you're regularly being woken up at night by your partner’s movements, or waking up in pain, then you’ll want to opt for a mattress that is specifically designed to target those issues. Some mattresses are better than others for certain problems - memory foam for instance is a great choice for reducing partner disruption.
