Our most asked questions about buying a mattress

Woman trying out new mattress in store

Mattresses are a big purchase, so most people understandably have a lot of questions when they go shopping for one. Pocket spring, memory foam - hybrid? Soft, firm? With so many options available, it’s not hard to see how you might be left scratching your head.

At Bedshed, we’re used to answering questions about shopping for a mattress - in fact, we’d say that our mattress experts have probably heard just about every mattress question there is!

Of course, there are a few questions that we get asked more regularly than others and we’ve found that the answers to these questions are a great starting point for finding the perfect mattress.

So, next time you go shopping for a new mattress, keep a few of these Q&A’s in mind.

How big should my mattress be?

The first question that most people ask when shopping for a mattress is; what size should they buy? To figure out the best mattress size for your needs, you’ll need to take a look at the space in your bedroom and also consider your current and future needs. For most adult sleepers we’d recommend opting for at least a king single and couples should look at getting a queen size mattress at a minimum. What type of mattress should I buy?

Mattresses come in many different varieties, from spring to memory foam or even hybrid, so it’s common for people to wonder which type they should buy. Although some mattress buyers will have a strong preference for one over another, there’s plenty of us out there who aren’t quite sure which we like most!

Generally, the best thing you can do when choosing which type of mattress you should buy is try them out. With spring mattresses you can expect a firmer and bouncier feel, while memory foam mattresses will contour around your body. A hybrid mattress will give a balance of both. Spring mattresses are excellent for most sleepers because they provide support, but they’re more likely to transfer motion than a memory foam mattress and they can’t be used with an adjustable base the way that foam and hybrid mattresses can. Does my sleeping position matter when buying a mattress?

The answer to this question is yes! Your sleeping position does matter when you’re choosing a mattress. One of the mistakes many people make when trying out a mattress is that they don’t test it out in the position that they actually sleep in. A mattress may feel perfectly comfortable when you’re testing it out while lying on your back, but it might be a different story altogether when you get it home and go to sleep on your side! When finding a mattress, it’s important that you consider your sleeping position as this will have an impact on the level of support you need.

Which mattress is best for back pain?

Unfortunately, we hear questions about back pain a lot in the mattress industry! It seems that far too many of us are waking up with achy backs because of our mattresses. Thankfully, if you’ve been asking the question ‘Can your mattress fix back pain?’, the answer is yes - the right mattress can help to alleviate pain and discomfort! Truthfully, there is no one-size-fits-all solution for back pain and no single mattress that is right for everyone. The right mattress for you is going to depend on your height, weight, sleeping position and health needs, but generally our best advice for managing and preventing mattress-related back pain is to look for options that will promote proper spinal alignment.

How do I stop my partner from shaking me awake?

Is partner disturbance an issue for you? We often speak to couples who are struggling with a mattress that transfers motion. It can be frustrating to share a bed when every little movement or shift in your body weight shakes the person next to you awake! For couples with different schedules, it can be the difference between a good night’s sleep and waking up tired and grumpy in the morning. So, if you’re looking for the best mattress for you as a couple, we’d suggest shopping for a memory foam mattress or a zoned pocket spring mattress.

Is there a mattress that can help with snoring?

We’re often asked if the right mattress can put a stop to snoring, and the answer is ‘sometimes, it depends’. While there are a lot of potential causes for snoring, a good mattress will usually at least help to keep the problem at a minimum. The wrong mattress can sometimes actually be the cause of snoring, particularly if it’s too soft as it can cause the back and chest to bow and put pressure on the airways - so investing in a mattress that offers the right amount of support could actually eliminate the problem altogether!’

What mattress should I buy for my kids?

Kids need a good supportive mattress that will give them enough room to grow and get a proper night’s rest. For most kids we’d suggest looking for a single to double size mattress for them to sleep on but there’s other things you should consider as well, like the size of their bedroom and how they like to use it. Can I get a good mattress with a smaller budget?

It is possible to find a great mattress, even if you don’t have a big budget. At Bedshed, we stock an extensive range of products that won’t break the bank, including queen mattresses under $500 and queen mattresses under $1,000

How long will my mattress last?

Most mattresses will last up to around 8 years before they need to be replaced, although it will depend on the specific mattress you choose and how well you care for it. All of the mattresses that we stock at Bedshed are covered by a 10 year warranty, so you can shop with complete peace of mind.

How do I look after my mattress?

In order to keep your mattress in good shape, it’s a good idea to cover it with a mattress protector (you can get info on the best mattress protector to buy in our ultimate guide to mattress protector).  We’d also suggest regularly airing out your mattress and changing the sheets, to keep it free from dust, mildew and mold. When it comes to cleaning or rotating your mattress, you should always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
